Intrepid Travel has acquired a Dutch tour operator in what the company called a "landmark deal."
Australia-based Intrepid acquired Sawadee Reizen from Travelopia, a move that adds $62 million in annual revenue and 20,000 customers, Intrepid said. Intrepid said the acquisition is the company's biggest to date.
Sawadee Reizen, headquartered in Amsterdam, offers about 250 trips across 100 countries. The addition of Sawadee to Intrepid's portfolio cements the Netherlands as the company's fourth-largest source market behind Australia, the U.S. and the U.K.
Intrepid and Sawadee have worked together since 2011, with Intrepid's destination management company operating some of Sawadee's trips.
Intrepid CEO James Thornton said, "Intrepid aims to be the world's largest vertically integrated experiential travel company, and bringing our two brands together is a major step toward that. We also both believe that travel can be a force for good in the world."
Travelopia CEO Andy Duncan said Sawadee is "passionate about delivering exceptional experiences for its customers."
Managing director Berend Simons will continue to lead Sawadee. The company will remain based in Amsterdam and continue operating under its name.
"Our leading position in the Dutch market, coupled with Intrepid's global expertise, means we will continue to deliver amazing trips for our customers and create impact for the communities we visit," Simons said.
Intrepid is making moves to expand in the U.S., as well. The company is deploying an aggressive marketing push to reach more Americans and is creating more itineraries for U.S. travelers.
